Singer at odds with Pence; why she bowed out of concert in Columbus

A native Columbus singer who has been a popular performer at the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s annual SALUTE! concert honoring military veterans said she bowed out of next week’s show as the featured vocalist because Gov. Mike Pence — whose social policies she disagrees with — would also have a role in the program.

Kate Hamilton said that as a bisexual, pro-choice descendant of immigrants, she takes issue with Pence’s policies that she says allow discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity. Hamilton, who wrote the she knows first-hand the isolation that comes from having an abortion, also said Pence has made it more difficult for women to have such procedures safely.
